About Brooklyn Historical Society

The mission of Brooklyn Historical Society is to connect the past to the present and make the vibrant history of Brooklyn tangible, relevant, and meaningful for today's diverse communities, and for generations to come. Founded in 1863, BHS is a nationally recognized urban history center, comprised of a museum; scholarly research library; and educational center dedicated to preserving and encouraging the study of Brooklyn's extraordinary 400-year history.  Located in Brooklyn Heights and housed in a magnificent landmark building designed by George Post and opened in 1881, today's BHS is a cultural hub for civic dialogue, thoughtful engagement and community outreach. 

 

Summary of Position
The Retail and Marketing Intern will gain exposure to both the front-of-house and behind-the-scenes workings of the museum by serving at the front desk and helping to execute public programs. This internship involves facilitating public access to the museum, working to develop and expand visitor information, and aiding in marketing and promotion of the museum, exhibits and retail store.

This year, the Brooklyn Historical Society celebrates our 150 Year Anniversary which will kick-off in our newly renovated first floor and lower level spaces.  Additionally, we are proud to expand our retail operation at BHS and will be launching our new store, along with our own unique merchandise, early in the fall.  Thus, the summer 2013 internship will focus on audience development/ increased institutional visibility, as well as branding and marketing our new retail gift store, which we will stock and merchandize over the summer.  The intern will conduct research in order to launch marketing and promotional campaigns. Advertising and marketing research will focus on the following areas: local/community outreach, neighborhood research, artists and designers of Brooklyn, DIY blogs, journalists, arts and culture writers in NYC, tourism, online and social media promotions and advertising. 

General Responsibilities

  • Assist with sourcing and developing BHS merchandise as well as research new vendor partnerships.

  • Prepare inventory and set up for new retail space.

  • Research marketing and promotional trends using social media.

  • Set up online promotions.

  • Visitor Services support: including customer care and assistance with ticketing and retail transactions.

  • Promote fall public programming online and via printed materials.

  • Conduct research in audience development and community outreach

Qualifications

  • College students, graduate students or recent graduates are encouraged to apply.

  • We are looking for someone who is outgoing and comfortable with face-to-face customer interactions

  • Pleasant phone manner.

  •  Must be organized and able to work independently on tasks.

  • Candidates with prior customer service, marketing, special events, museum and/or office experience preferred.

 Internship Hours and Duration

Brooklyn Historical Society (BHS) is seeking an Intern for the summer months.  Start and end dates are flexible, but internship will be generally run for 12 weeks beginning in June and ending in August of 2013, with a Tuesdays- Saturdays schedule. (Specific schedule to be agreed upon if position is offered.)

  • Minimum of 2-Maximum of 5days a week, 8 hours per day, Tuesday- Saturday

  • Internships are unpaid, but can be applied toward course credit. Time commitment may be increased to meet course hour requirements.

  • Assistance during evening and weekend public programs.

Oral History Interns
Brooklyn Historical Society and Museum of Chinese in America

In 1993-1994, the Brooklyn Historical Society (BHS) and the Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) collected oral history interviews regarding Brooklyn’s Chinese community in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. 30 interviews were conducted in English, Mandarin, or Cantonese. Narrators include recent Chinese immigrants as well as people of Italian and Puerto Rican heritage who live in the neighborhood.

BHS and MOCA are digitizing this collection to make it newly accessible. BHS and MOCA seek an Intern to help transfer interviews from cassette tape to digital audio and write summaries of these interviews prior to cataloging. Candidates interested in Brooklyn history, Chinese history, oral history, digital audio technology and archives should apply. Academic credit may be possible.

Responsibilities:
• Transferring oral history interviews conducted in Cantonese and Mandarin from cassette tape to digital audio.
• Summarizing (in English) content of interview.

Qualifications:
• Conversational fluency in Cantonese and English is required
• Comfort with Mac and PC computers is required
• No previous digitizing experience necessary

Development/Membership Intern

The Brooklyn Historical Society (BHS) is seeking Development / Membership Interns.  Internships are unpaid, however may be applied toward course credit.


Responsibilities
Interns will gain exposure to fundraising and membership development activities for a nonprofit organization. Interns will assist the Development and Membership Department with projects aimed at maintaining the Museum's relationship with current donors and members.


Duties

Assist with record keeping, including data entry into donor data base (Raiser's Edge 7), and filing

  • Prepare membership information for mailing
  • Assist with special events
  • Undertake various projects as needed

Qualifications

Knowledge of Raiser's Edge 7 (preferred, but not required)

  • Willingness to assist as needed in cooperative team environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently
  • Excellent computer skills, including Excel and Word

 

Time Commitment

2 days (minimum 5 hours daily) per week, Monday- Friday.

Education Internship

Education Intern Summary of Work: The Brooklyn Historical Society Education Department seeks a summer graduate student intern to assist with the planning and implementation of school, teacher, and public programs, especially in preparation for BHS’s 150th year anniversary.    Education interns work with BHS’s 3-person Education Department and report to the Director of Education and Public Programs or Manager of Teaching and Learning as appropriate.  Graduate student interns will be responsible for a specific project that will support the BHS Education Department and may require historical research, development of curriculum materials, or school partnership planning.  Additionally the intern will assist in the creation of professional development workshops for teachers, lead school and group tours of the museum, support our ongoing collaboration with the Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at BLDG 92, and assist with the creation of content for BHS’s social media outlets. General Responsibilities:

  • Teach school programs on- and off-site
  • Co-facilitate staff development workshops for teachers when needed
  • Conduct research for social media posts
  • General education tasks might also include maintaining a teacher database, revising curriculum materials and tour-related didactic materials, and other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications:

  • B.A. in history, education, art, or a related field
  • Currently enrolled in a M.A. program in Museum Studies, Museum Education, Education, Public History, or a related field (preferred)
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to carry out multiple and diverse tasks concurrently
  • Willingness to work as part of a team/can-do, positive attitude is helpful
  • A visit to the museum (128 Pierrepont Street) prior to applying is strongly recommended

 

Internship Hours and Duration:

  • Internships are between eight and 24 hours per week, Tuesday through Friday.
  • Internships are unpaid, for school credit only.
