Walking Tour: Brooklyn Heights

Come explore the brand-new Brooklyn Navy Yard Center at Building 92 (BLDG 92)!  At the Educators Open House on Wednesday March 14, 2012 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., you’ll get to tour the BLDG 92 exhibits, check out the all-new Brooklyn Navy Yard: Past, Present, and Future Curriculum Kit, and speak with BHS Educators about school programs at BLDG 92 for your classes this year.  Mark your calendars now.  RSVP to enter the raffle for BLDG 92 prizes including a Curriculum Kit (normally priced at $99). Workshops for Teachers

Through professional development workshops, at BHS or at your school, BHS education staff shares approaches to inquiry and document-based teaching strategies and assists teachers in using the museum’s collections to teach effective and compelling curricula. We teach themes that align with the content in your classroom, including European Encounter, American Revolution, Abolitionism, Urban & Industrial Change, The Brooklyn Bridge… and more! 

Some recent workshop titles include:

  • Immigrants at the Time Machine Lunch Counter
  • Journaling with Jasper: Transforming a Dutch Explorer’s Journal into a Facebook Page
  • Patriots Pop Up: Creating Interactive Portraits from the American Revolution
  • Make your Mark: Bringing Historical Markers into the 21st Century
  • What’s Wrong…or Right with this Picture? Investigating Jackie Robinson and the Brooklyn Dodgers in Film and Autobiography

Walking Tour: Brooklyn Heights from George Washington to Jackie Robinson

In a two-hour walking tour of BHS’s historic neighborhood, teachers learn how Brooklyn Heights was transformed from farmland into a robust urban environment that has contributed to the city’s architecture, culture, commerce, and industry. $300 for two hours with up to twenty teachers.
