SATURDAY ACADEMY 2011

The Spring 2011 Program:
Brooklyn Historical Society, in partnership with The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, presents Saturday Academy for students in grades 6-12. Saturday Academy at Brooklyn Historical Society is a free, six-week program for students interested in American history or SAT preparation, and best of all, there isn't any homework or testing! Eligible students may take one or two classes per Saturday. Students who attend all sessions, complete course requirements and an evaluation will receive a Certificate of Achievement on the last day of the program.
The Spring 2011 session will meet: March 5, March 12, March 19, March 26, April 2, and April 9.
Courses include:
History with Hands: Exploring Brooklyn History Through Art, Making Grades 6 – 12
Classes available at 9:00am and 10:30am
Instructor: Monique Ford
In this workshop, students will explore key communities in Brooklyn and their role in shaping U.S. history from the 1600s to the present. Using documents, photos, neighborhood walks and resources based on the Brooklyn Historical Society's collections, you will participate in hands-on art making such as drawing, painting, and collage that will chronicle students' journeys through history. Sessions will culminate in a gallery exhibition and sharing of student work.
Instructor Monique Ford has been a teaching artist in New York City for the last five years. She has led arts education programs at the 92nd St. Y Art Center, Studio in a School, Rotunda Gallery, Manhattan New School, Free Arts NYC, Publicolor, Katonah Museum of Art, TriBeCa Community School and the Brooklyn Historical Society.
SAT/AP U.S. History Review
Grades 11 – 12 only
Classes available at 9:00am and 10:30am
Instructors: Eugene V. Resnick and Jeff Schneider
This course will help students prepare for the Advanced Placement Exam in U.S. history and the SAT Subject Test in U.S. history. We review events, terms and people that appear frequently on the exams and review both multiple choice questions and essay questions. This course will examine areas where students want additional review and focus. Mr. Resnick has taught Advanced Placement U.S. history for eight years at Midwood High School and has co-authored a Kaplan review book on the SAT Subject Test in U.S. history. Mr. Schneider has taught Advanced Placement U.S. history for twelve years at Midwood High School and has also co-authored the Kaplan review book on the SAT Subject Test in U.S. history.
