Brooklyn Historical Society in partnership with The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, presents Saturday Academy for students in grades 6-12. Saturday Academy at Brooklyn Historical Society is a free, eight-week program for students interested in American History, and best of all, there isn't any homework or testing! Eligible students may take one or two classes per Saturday at Brooklyn Historical Society. The Spring 2008 session will meet: March 8, March 15, March 29, April 5, April 12, May 3, May 10 and May 17.
History with Hands: Exploring Brooklyn History Through Arts Making
Grades 6 – 12
1 class at 9:00am and 10:30am
Instructor: Vickie Fremont
In this workshop, you will explore key communities in Brooklyn and their role in shaping American History from 1839 to the present. Using photos, documents, neighborhood walks, and resources based on the Collection of Brooklyn Historical Society, you will participate in hands-on arts making such as masks, puppets and bookmaking that will chronicle your journey through history. Sessions will culminate in a gallery exhibition and sharing of your work. Ms. Fremont speaks six languages and has developed arts programs for all ages in New York City libraries, museums and schools for more than ten years.
SAT/AP U.S. History Review
Grades 9 – 12 only
2 classes at 9:00am and 10:30am
Instructors: Eugene V. Resnick and Jeff Schneider
This course will help you better prepare for the Advanced Placement Exam in United States History and the SAT Subject Test in United States History. You will review events, terms, and people that appear frequently on the exams. During this course you will review multiple choice questions as well as essay questions. We will focus on areas in which you need additional work. Mr. Resnick has taught Advanced Placement U.S. History for seven years at Midwood High School and has co-authored a Kaplan review book on the SAT Subject Test in U.S. History. Mr. Schneider has taught Advanced Placement U.S. History for nine years at Midwood High School and has also co-authored the Kaplan review book on the SAT Subject Test in U. S. History.
