Have a question about Brooklyn's history or culture? Need help searching our collections? Planning to come in to BHS to do research? We're here to help!

Need an appointment?

Requests for appointments to use archival material should be submitted at least two days prior to the date you would like to come in. Call or email to request an appointment; you will receive an email confirmation once you are booked.

No appointment is needed to use maps, books, or periodicals or to search the image or oral history databases.

Unable to visit the library in person?

While we are always happy to help identify collections, suggest resources, or answer basic questions, reference staff cannot conduct in-depth research on behalf of library users. If you are unable to visit BHS, we can provide a list of local researchers-for-hire. For genealogists, see also the Association of Professional Genealogists directory.
