Photocopies, Image and Audio Reproductions
The Brooklyn Historical Society is pleased to offer photocopying, digital reproductions of visual and textual materials, digital audio clips, and self-photography of materials. All copying requires the permission of Collection Staff via this application form. Cash and credit card payments are accepted, and mailing services are available. All requests are subject to copyright law.
Photocopies
Library staff can make black and white photocopies for researchers provided that doing so will not cause damage to the item. This judgment will be made by staff. Simply fill out our application form and submit it with the item(s) to any staff member. Depending on the size of the request, orders may not be able to be fulfilled the same day they are submitted.
Photography
The Brooklyn Historical Society allows photography in the Othmer Library. Visitors who wish to photograph the interior details of the room may do so without flash. Researchers who wish to photograph collection items (including pages from published materials, items from archival collections, other library materials) may do so without flash.
Scanning
The Brooklyn Historical Society charges a fee to scan photographs, paintings, and other items in our holdings. We supply jpeg files via email. This supports the maintenance of this media as well as the staff time to produce it. Please review our fee schedule, submit an application form, and the Photographic Archivist will reply to requests within four weeks with an invoice for the cost of the request.
Audio Reproduction
The Brooklyn Historical Society charges a fee to provide audio clips from our holdings. This supports the maintenance of this media as well as the staff time to produce it. Please review our fee schedule, submit an application form, and the Oral Historian will reply to requests within four weeks with an invoice for the cost of the request.
BHS Reproduction Rights Policy
The Brooklyn Historical Society seeks to make as many items in our holdings available to the public for research purposes, publication, and educational uses. While BHS owns copyright to many items in our collection, others fall into the public domain and others are of unknown copyright status. While it is the researcher's responsibility to locate copyright holders other than BHS, we offer some guidance in doing so. Please review our full Reproduction Rights Policy here.
