Planned Giving
The Breuckelen Legacy Circle recognizes supporters of the Brooklyn Historical Society who have included the Society in their wills or estate plans. The Breuckelen Legacy Circle will ensure that the Brooklyn Historical Society continues to play a vital role in Brooklyn for generations to come.
The Brooklyn Historical Society is happy to work with you and your advisors to structure a gift that meets your philanthropic and financial goals. For example, you might
- create a named fund to support long-term maintenance of our historic building
- establish a fund to support our education programs
- endow Othmer Library, a dynamic repository of oral histories, artifacts, books and photographs devoted to Brooklyn history.
Remember the Brooklyn Historical Society in your will
Set an important example for your children and grandchildren, and consider joining our Breuckelen Legacy Circle. Bequests will ensure that the Brooklyn Historical Society enriches lives for years to come -- and may provide significant financial and tax benefits to your estate.
Review your choices carefully with your financial advisor. The Brooklyn Historical Society may be included as a beneficiary by amending your current will or by drawing up a new one. Sample bequest language is as follows:
“I give and bequeath the sum of $___ , (or ___% of my estate), (or ___ shares of x corporation) to the Brooklyn Historical Society, 128 Pierrepont Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201 to be used for its general purposes.”
Donor Legacy Oral History
People who make planned gifts to the Brooklyn Historical Society will have the opportunity to create a Donor Legacy Oral History. The Brooklyn Historical Society’s oral historian will individually interview donors about their motivation for making a planned gift. The interview will provide donors with an opportunity to reflect on the inspiration and catalyst for their generosity and to share their values, life's lessons, hopes and dreams for the future with family, friends and community. The Donor Legacy Oral Histories will become a part of the Brooklyn Historical Society’s archives.
Please consider joining our Breuckelen Legacy Circle today. Benefits include:
- personal Donor Legacy Oral History
- recognition at an annual Breuckelen Legacy Circle reception
- listing in the Brooklyn Historical Society website and the Breuckelen Legacy Circle member roster at the Brooklyn Historical Society
- invitations to private 1863 Legacy Society member events and programs
- the personal satisfaction of contributing a legacy gift to the Brooklyn Historical Society
