Virtual Program | One Person, One Vote: The People vs. The Electoral College

From its inception, the Electoral College and its value to our American Democracy have been subject to continuous debate.

Is it a flawed mechanism, repeatedly resulting in the overruling of the popular vote? Or an institution fundamental to American federalism, that levels the balance between those in and outside of large cities? New York Times editorial board member and Supreme Court reporter Jesse Wegman makes a powerful case for the former in his book Let the People Pick the President: The Case for Abolishing the Electoral College. He is joined by investigative journalist Andrew Gumbel for a conversation that unpacks the complex history of the Electoral College, how it has become a tool of inequality, and why at its core it is not only antiquated but anti-democratic.
