This spring Brooklyn Historical Society invites you to join BHS Trustee Sylvia Wong Lewis and her husband, Byron – along with several Trustees – in supporting our commitment to reveal the central role of race, identity, and inequality in shaping Brooklyn’s history. This special Challenge Grant will match all gifts made during our spring fundraising appeal, up to $25,000.
Race & History Challenge Grant
Double your impact today with a donation.
“We are excited several fellow trustees are joining us to support Brooklyn Historical Society’s efforts to address race and inequality with an increase to the Matching Challenge Grant.” – BHS Trustee Sylvia Wong Lewis & Byron Lewis
This is an exciting opportunity to double your gift and support all that BHS does to shine a light on inequities in our democracy through exhibitions, education programs, public programming, and more.
- Your gift of $100 becomes $200 towards our public programming, helping secure countless distinguished speakers for our programs that focus on topics of ongoing racial inequality in education, criminal justice, voting rights, and beyond. Examples of recent programs include “The Pseudoscience of Xenophobia: Eugenics and Immigration in America,” Taylor Branch on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and “Force & Freedom: Black Abolitionists and the Politics of Violence.”
- Your gift of $250 becomes $500 towards training for NYC teachers, providing the tools they need to effectively examine racism and prejudice in their classrooms through professional development opportunities, free curricula, and more.
- Your gift of $500 becomes $1,000 towards our exhibitions and history projects, which cover topics from slavery and emancipation, to school segregation and civil and human rights movements, including recent exhibitions and projects including In Pursuit of Freedom, Taking Care of Brooklyn, and Muslims in Brooklyn.
You are essential in helping BHS build a stronger community in Brooklyn and beyond. Thank you for considering a gift toward this Challenge Grant. Make a gift online today.
