Our Two Locations

Our main location on Pierrepont Street in Brooklyn Heights, home to the Othmer Library, and our second location at the Empire Stores in DUMBO are a fifteen-minute scenic walk from each other. Choose your starting point and map your journey below. For detailed directions, click here.

The Othmer Library Reading Room will be closed during the month of August. During this period, you may continue to reach library staff by phone or email regarding research guidance, donations, or image reproductions.

Both the Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO locations are ADA accessible.

BHS Pierrepont

Wheelchair Access
Entrance:  The accessible entrance is adjacent to the main entrance at 128 Pierrepont Street.
Galleries:  All levels of the museum are accessible by elevator.
Restrooms:  Accessible restrooms are located on the lower level. Brooklyn Historical Society offers a visual description of the building for people who are blind or partially sighted through New York Beyond Sight.

Service animals are welcome at 128 Pierrepont Street.

BHS DUMBO

Wheelchair Access
BHS Dumbo is on the second floor of the Empire Stores building, accessible by elevator.

Visitor Policies

Photography
Visitors are welcome to take photographs of the building, exhibitions, and objects except where otherwise noted. Use of flash, monopods, tripods, and selfie sticks is not permitted.

Eating and Drinking
Eating and drinking is not allowed in any of the galleries. Thank you for your cooperation.

Smoking
Thank you for smoking outside at a reasonable distance from the building.

Mobile Devices
While we encourage the use of mobile devices to access information about the collections, please do not place or receive phone calls in the galleries or library.

Luggage and Oversized Bags
At our main site on Pierrepont Street, please store luggage and oversize bags in the free lockers on the first floor.

Sketching and Note-Taking
Please feel free to be creative and take notes. We ask that you use pencils only. Should you need one, please ask at the front desk.
